When the repair of ceilings, walls and floors has been completed, it is the turn of installing the floor skirting. If rarely anyone looks up, then the floor plinth is always in sight. Therefore, it must be installed flawlessly and firmly fixed to the wall, as it will be subjected to constant exposure to a vacuum cleaner brush, accidentally touching with your feet or when carrying furniture and things. The outer corners must be especially firmly fixed.
Mainly used skirting board made of wood, plastic, MDF, metal, stone and ceramics. A wooden skirting board is rarely installed, because to create a beautiful appearance it requires perfect evenness of the walls, complex paintwork and expensive (like metal). MDF skirting board is very fragile. A stone and ceramic skirting board is only suitable for floors made of ceramic tile, tile or stone.
Therefore, today the most popular plastic skirting board. It is great for laminate flooring, wood, linoleum, carpeting. Cheap and waterproof, easy to install, has a cable channel for wiring, the market has a large assortment of colors.
Calculation of the required number of plinth rails
The floor skirting board is usually produced 2.5 m long. Before installing the skirting board, it is necessary to calculate the required number of racks. The calculation is performed according to the formula, as for the ceiling skirting. It is necessary to divide the perimeter of the room by the length of one rail. A specialized online calculator will help you with this.
|Online calculator for calculating the required number of skirting boards|
|Room length, m:|
|Width of the room, m:|
|Rail length, m:|
To exclude additional joints, one rail should be bought more, since in addition to the appearance, there will be additional costs for connecting elements, the price for the heels of which can reach the cost of one rail.
Choosing the color of the skirting board
Perhaps the most important when buying a skirting board is the choice of its color. When choosing a color in the store, due to differences in the color temperature of the light sources, it seemed that the color of the skirting board, suitable for the floor and walls, might turn out to be of the wrong shade. Therefore, choosing the color, you should take with you to the store scraps of wallpaper and flooring, attaching them to the plinth rail, making the choice will be much easier. If the walls or floor are painted, then when painting them, you need to paint a small piece of thick paper or plywood, for a sample, especially for choosing the color of the baseboard.
Accessories for joining rails
A plastic baseboard is also good because it has special fittings, due to which high precision is not required when sawing. Therefore, the installation of the skirting board is possible for a home master who does not even have experience in this business. Beautiful appearance of the result of the work is provided by the design of the plinth.
The plastic skirting accessories kit includes five elements: the right and left plugs, the connecting element of the skirting boards, and the inner and outer corners. They are in color and texture exactly match the baseboard and are sold separately.
In the photo, the external and internal appearance of the right stub. The left end cap is exactly the same, but made in mirror image. Therefore, when calculating the number of fittings, this fact must be taken into account. The plug has a foot with a hole for fixing it with a self-tapping screw on the wall. This hardware element is usually installed on the end of the plinth rail at the door trim.
The docking element serves to close the gap between the plinth rails when the length of the wall exceeds the length of one plinth rail, usually equal to 2.5 m.
The photograph shows a docking element mounted on the rails; on the near rail, a decorative cable-channel plug has not yet been inserted.
In this photo you see the inner corner. It holds without screws, due to the pressure of the plinth with rails. When installing the skirting board, you need to ensure the same angle clamp, otherwise it can be installed crookedly and will look careless.
And so the external corner is arranged from the inside. For mounting to the wall he has two legs. External corners are rarely used, but I was “lucky." It was required during installation of the plinth to install eight such corners.
Installation of skirting boards requires a constant change of place of work, so in order to have everything you need on hand, it is desirable to fit hardware, fasteners and tools in a box and move it along with you.
In the photo there is a box-cash register, in the offices of which are laid out accessories, dowels, self-tapping screws and small tools.
How to install a plastic baseboard
The plastic baseboard has a dual function: it improves the appearance of the walls, hiding their curvature and other imperfections, and protects the base of the walls from all types of influences. In most cases, the plastic baseboard is attached directly to the walls, not to the floor, as it is very flexible and designed to hide the curvature of the wall.
If you want to install a plastic baseboard, you have two options: either using a good glue, glue the baseboard to the walls of the room, or attach it with screws. We recommend that you choose the first option for drywall walls and the second option for brick walls.
If you want to install a plastic baseboard on drywall, you must determine the places where you have to screw the screws. Make sure that there is no gap between the baseboard and the wall, however, as between the baseboard and the floor. If you need to install the baseboard on a brick wall, you must drill holes every 40 cm, insert the dowels and fix the baseboard with screws. We recommend that you use a quality impact drill to make proper holes in the brick walls.
To install a plastic baseboard, you need the following:
|The plinth is plastic.||Miter box or angle cutting machine.|
|Accessories for plastic skirting (connecting elements, angles, plugs).||Hacksaw.|
|Dowels and screws.||Drill and drill.|
|Roulette, pencil, square.|
|A vacuum cleaner.|
|Protective gloves, glasses.|
- Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and other residues after drilling holes in the wall.
To make precise cuts you will need a miter box and a hacksaw. In addition, in this project we will show you how to fix plastic skirting boards to concrete walls, therefore, you will need to buy screws, dowels and other necessary accessories (it is assumed that you already have a drill). We chose this path when implementing our project, but this does not mean at all that you must act in the same way.
Tools and supplies needed to install a plastic baseboard.
First you need to measure the perimeter of your room to determine the required length of the baseboard. Remember to add 5-10% to the waste when cutting. Plastic skirting comes in a wide variety of shapes and colors, so it is best to pay attention to this aspect before placing your final order.
Tip: If you want to hide wires or cables, buy a skirting board with a special cable channel. The baseboard of this model consists of two parts - a body in which you can hide the wiring, and a masking cover.
Start the installation of the skirting board from the most remote corner of the room, installing solid pieces in the most visible places of the room. In most cases, these seemingly insignificant details make the project more successful, so pay attention to them during work.
If you do not want to use glue to fix the baseboard, you must fix the bar with self-tapping screws every 25-40 cm, after drilling holes in the wall and inserting dowels.
Installing a plastic baseboard.
To do this, you will need a drill and small drills. You must place the baseboard in the correct place, making sure that there are no gaps between it and the floor, and drill holes through the back of the baseboard every 25 cm.
Tip: You do not need to drill deep holes in the wall at this stage - you just have to use a drill to mark the places where you will need to install dowels.
Drilling holes through the wall of a plastic baseboard.
Now, laying the baseboard aside, enlarge the holes with a drill of a larger diameter, the size of which corresponds to the size of the plastic dowels. Remember that if you have to drill a concrete or brick wall, you should use drills designed specifically for these purposes. In addition, in order to obtain holes in such materials, it is better to use a hammer drill having a torque control function.
Tip: If your walls are made of drywall, you can screw the screws directly, without first drilling holes, at the locations of the frame racks.
Drilling holes in the wall.
Having finished drilling, you must use a vacuum cleaner to remove all dust and brick / concrete chips formed during the operation of the drill. This moment is of great importance for your project, otherwise you will not be able to properly align, and therefore, correctly install the baseboard.
Tip: It’s better to drill all the necessary holes along the wall, and only then start cleaning - this will allow you to speed up the process. If you go to this step, it means that things are going just fine with you, and you are on the way to completing the work.
Cleaning of debris remaining after drilling.
Now you have to insert plastic dowels into the holes, then to fix the skirting board using self-tapping screws. To do this, you will need a wooden or rubber mallet. Make sure that the dowels are completely recessed in the wall, their edge should be flush with the surface of the wall.
Installation of plastic dowels.
Finally, you can proceed to fixing the baseboard itself using self-tapping screws. You can use a screwdriver to speed up the process.
Tip: Do not tighten the self-tapping screws too much, but at the same time they should not remain completely twisted. In the first case, you risk damaging the baseboard, in the second - there will be a gap between the wall and the baseboard.
Fixing the skirting board using self-tapping screws.
After fixing the baseboard, you just have to close its decorative cover. If you need to place any wires inside the baseboard, you can postpone this operation until you finish the whole project.
Tip: When inserting the baseboard cover, do not use too much force, as you can easily damage it. Although these skirting boards are designed to protect walls, they can withstand far from all effects.
Installing the skirting cover mask.
If the baseboard is shorter than the wall, you must connect the two slats with a special plastic connector.
Tip: You should take this aspect into account at the planning stage of work, and try to arrange the skirting so that the connecting elements are in the least visible places.
The connection of two fragments of the plinth.
Installing the skirting board in the corners of the room is a bit more difficult, so you need to focus to do the job in a professional manner.
The first thing you have to do is mark the cut line with a pencil. This is a more than understandable operation, so there is no need to dwell on this point in detail.
Marking the cut line.
Then it is necessary to saw off a fragment of the baseboard of the required length, using a miter box and a hacksaw. If you wish, you can use an angle cutting machine for this purpose, but first you need to make sure that it has the appropriate blade for cutting plastic products, otherwise you will not get a quality cut.
Sawing off a plastic baseboard.
Next you must take measurements on the other side of the corner. Just mark a clearly visible line drank.
The formation of the outer corner.
Fixing the baseboard to the wall is the same as you did on straight sections of the wall. This means that you must drill holes every 25 cm, insert plastic dowels and then fasten the baseboard using self-tapping screws. After installing the sawn off fragments of the plinth in place, connect them using a special plastic corner.
Installation of a decorative plastic corner.
After you have installed all the fragments of the plastic baseboard, you must reinsert the cover. In principle, this operation can be handled without any special problems. It is only necessary to ensure that no gaps remain between the base of the baseboard and between the baseboard cover and the plastic fittings.
The connection of two fragments of the plinth.
Remember that the installation of plastic skirting boards is not difficult and does not require large expenses, but it can radically change the look of your home if you use the right materials and tools and follow our instructions.

How to install a skirting board made of wood or MDF
We recommend starting the installation of the baseboard with the longest wall of the room. If the baseboard is longer than the wall, you will have to saw off a piece of the right size. If it is shorter than the wall, you will need to connect two or more skirting boards. In this case, you should know that their joint must be oblique. This type of joint requires cutting the ends of the skirting boards at an angle of 45 ° with their subsequent joining with decorative nails or glue. Cutting at an angle of 45º can be done using a miter box.
To give the already installed baseboard a neat appearance, it is necessary to fill in all the cracks in the internal and external corners, the gaps between the baseboard and the wall and the holes from nails and self-tapping screws with wood putty, then sand the surfaces on which the putty was applied, and repeat the procedure if necessary. If you want to protect the flooring (in some cases, you may need to fill the gap between the skirting board and the floor), you should use masking tape, which is removed at the end of the work.
To install the skirting boards with your own hands, you will need the following:
|Skirting board.||Miter box or angle cutting machine.|
|Decorative (finishing) nails.||hacksaw,|
|Filling on wood.||drill and drill|
|Joiner glue (in some cases).||roulette,|
|a vacuum cleaner.|
- Measure the perimeter of the room and add to the resulting figure 10% on the waste when cutting.
- Use the miter box to create internal and external corner joints.
- If you need to make a saw cut at a non-standard angle, use waste material. On them you can practice, make a few trial cuts until you find the right way.
How to cut a skirting board of the required size at a certain angle
Use the miter box to get a precise cut. Without it, it is impossible to perform quality work on installing the baseboard in the area of the internal or external corners of the room. Place the baseboard in the miter box and, holding it firmly, saw it at a 45 ° angle with a hacksaw. After you finish sawing the skirting board, use medium-sized sandpaper to sand the cut.
Sawing the skirting board using a miter box.
If you want to install skirting boards in the inner corner of the room, you must make a connection at an angle of 45 ° or an overlapped seam. The latter requires the use of special tools and experience, so we do not recommend it to beginners "homemade." To connect at an angle, you must know the exact angle between the walls. To form a standard angle of 90 °, each of the two plinths to be joined is typically sawed at a 45 ° angle.

How to dock a skirting board if its length is insufficient
Measure the baseboard of the required length, and it is better to take measurements not once, but two or three times, because any mistake can lead to wasted material. If you need to install two or more skirting boards along one wall, you will have to arrange their joint, as shown in the figure. Use the miter box to saw off the ends of the plinth at an angle of 45º.

Methods for fixing the baseboard itself
To fix the baseboard, you can use several options: decorative nails, glue or metal clips. Metal fasteners are included with MDF skirting boards.
To fix wooden skirting boards, hammer in the carnations with a hammer, being careful not to damage the skirting board during the process. We recommend that you use a heterogeneity detector to make sure that you drive nails out of the void.
Tip: Use the dugout to drown the nail head in the tree. After you finish the work, putty putty on all the holes from the nails and possible gaps between the wall and the baseboard.
Plinth installation using a pneumatic hammer.
Как мы уже упоминали, существуют плинтусы, которые крепятся не на гвозди, а фиксируются в специальных зажимах (скобах). Такое крепление обычно предпочтительнее, когда вы имеете дело с бетонными стенами. To install the baseboard correctly, the clamps must be fixed at the same level, and for this you should use the water or laser level. Even a small mistake can lead to poor results, so take the time to take all the steps with extreme care.
It is necessary to mark with a pencil the places where you will drill holes, leaving about 30 cm between the marks. Drill holes using an impact drill or hammer drill. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the surface of dust and concrete / brick chips. Insert the dowels into the holes. The next step is to fasten the clamps using self-tapping screws screwed into the dowels. The last operation we performed using a screwdriver with torque control, but you can use a conventional screwdriver, although it will require more time and effort.
Fixing the baseboard to the clamps.
External corner design
Joining two skirting boards around the outside corner is easy enough if you use the right tools and techniques. Saw off the ends of two fragments of the plinth at an angle of 45º. If there is a slight gap between the connected pieces of the baseboard as a result of a slight deviation of the corner of the room from the straight line, you can fill it with putty. Remove excess material with a damp cloth.
Do-it-yourself plastic baseboard installation
Skirting boards are made of materials of various composition. Plastic products are especially popular. MDF skirting boards, steel, ceramic and stone models are used less. The easiest way to create the illusion of smooth walls with plastic skirting boards. They perfectly fit to the surface, differ in affordable cost and are diverse in color and texture solutions.
PVC skirting boards are suitable for both wood floors and for coatings made of laminate or linoleum. The skirting board is moisture resistant, easy to install, characterized by the presence of cable channels, inside of which there are wires.
Before starting the installation of skirting boards, you should determine the amount of consumables. The optimal length of the skirting board for the floor is about 250 cm. Based on this, the number of skirting boards is calculated. Do not forget to add 10-15% of joints compensation and other errors to the obtained value.
There are special online calculators that will help you calculate the number of skirting boards. Although it is quite possible to carry out this process yourself. It is enough to add the length of the room to its width and multiply this value by two. Divide the result by 250 cm or 2.5 m, depending on in which units the previous calculations were performed.
The next stage is the selection of the optimal color for the skirting board, which blends perfectly with the interior of the room. In the process of choosing the baseboard, we recommend taking along a small segment of the wallpaper to match it in color.
Plastic skirting boards are joined with the help of special fittings. When performing their sawing, it is not necessary to observe the high accuracy of the joining of elements. The skirting board design itself allows you to get the perfect appearance of the coating. Accessories for plastic skirting boards contain two plugs - right and left, elements for joining, internal and external corners. Try to choose the accessories as accurately as possible close in color to the baseboard itself.
Do not confuse the number of plugs - the right and left parts are exactly the same only have a mirror image of each other. When calculating the number of stubs, consider this fact. Docking parts are mounted to overlap the joints between the two skirting boards. Self-tapping screws are not needed for fixing the inner corners; they automatically snap after installation. Install this element with the same pressure, thus improving the appearance of the skirting board. The outer corners are distinguished by the presence of two legs that hold them on the wall. Their use in the installation process is not particularly relevant.

Installation work on fixing the baseboard implies a constant change in the workplace, so it is recommended to put all the equipment and fittings in one box, which you will move in relation to the place of work.
Installation of plastic skirting boards begins with cutting them into elements of the required length. At the same time, try to ensure that the seams between the plinth are located in a less visible place. It is recommended to begin installation work from the inside corners or from the doorway. Install two previously prepared skirtings and make a mark on one of them so that the skirting goes inside the corner by 0.5 cm.
Initially install skirting boards that are not susceptible to cutting. Install the elements for joining the baseboard only if the length of the baseboard is not enough to cover the wall of the room. When cutting the baseboard, always keep a margin of a few millimeters so that the baseboard completely covers the wall.
Sawing a plinth made of plastic is much easier than wood. In this case, there is no need to adhere to special angles. For quick and high-quality cutting of the plinth, use a hacksaw for metal. In this case, the baseboard is placed in a special miter box. Thus, it is possible to achieve perfectly even angles in a short time. Then, after cutting, with a knife, remove the burrs from plastic.
The next step is the construction of holes for skirting fasteners. The holes should be done as accurately as possible, for this you should attach a plinth to the wall, mark it, and then drill a hole. A drill with functional nozzles for perforation is sufficient for drilling. To ensure precision drilling, you will need a special device called a conductor. If the walls in the room are perfectly flat, then the distance between the fasteners for installing the baseboard is about half a meter. Otherwise, this value decreases. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from drilling.
If gypsum plasterboard is used to make the walls in the room, the installation process of the plinth is slightly modified. If during the construction of the holes for the baseboard it was possible to get into the profile on which the drywall is fixed, then only self-tapping screws are used to fix the baseboard. Otherwise, the baseboard is fixed with dowels called the “butterfly”.
To install such dowels, a hole in the wall is initially made, the dowel must be closely installed in it. For drilling use any drill, as well as a conductor. Next, the pressing parts of the dowel are pressed against it and the element is installed in the hole. For quicker fixing of the expansion bolt shield it is allowed to use a hammer. Note that the size of the self-tapping screw should be slightly smaller than the dowel head.
The second way of installing floor skirtings with your own hands involves pre-drilling a hole in the skirting itself, and in relation to these holes, drilling a wall. For these purposes, we recommend using dowels that have hats. This installation method is less reliable and during its implementation quite often it is not possible to avoid the appearance of cracks between the wall and the baseboard.
In addition, it is more difficult to dismantle the baseboard installed in this way. If the baseboard is fixed with self-tapping screws, then it is recommended to make a hole on the plastic with an awl or screwdriver. Rotating the awl, gradually move the baseboard, so you can get a hole with a high level of density. Install the self-tapping screw in the previously made hole, fix the baseboard on the wall.
The process of fixing the external corners is quite responsible, since these elements are under constant operational movement. Since the fixation point of the corners is twenty millimeters from the installation site of the screws, there is a possibility of damage to them. To do this, in order to avoid the appearance of this unpleasant process, even when carrying out repairs, try to ensure that the external corners are perfectly aligned.
External corners are fixed in the same way as internal ones. On the cable channels set special plugs for decorative purposes. This completes the installation of plastic skirting boards. If there are seams between the wall and the baseboard, it is recommended to increase the number of fasteners needed to secure the baseboard.
DIY warm skirting
Warm skirting boards are a great alternative to a modern heating system. Under these small interior items is a wire system that provides primary or secondary heating.
Among the main elements of warm skirting boards, we note the presence of:
- ducts and brackets that fix the heaters,
- tube converter
- elements of the rotary system.
All parts are assembled in a single design. Among the advantages of this system, we note:
- uniform and quick heating of the walls - preventing the development of fungus and mold,
- uniform temperature distribution both near the floor and on the ceiling,
- Attractive appearance
- since the hull of the baseboard is closed, it is possible to achieve the cost-effectiveness of using this system.
There are two options for warm skirting boards - water and electric. The efficiency of these systems is the same, the main difference is the principle of heating a thermal carrier.
In order to install an electric warm baseboard, you will need a powerful energy supply system. For economical use of the system, it is recommended to additionally install a heating temperature controller.
In order to heat the water baseboard, a heating boiler is used. This version of the skirting board is more economical to use.
To do the installation of the skirting board with your own hands, follow the instructions below:
1. A wall bracket is installed. To fix it, use screws or dowels.
2. Installation of convectors and their connection to the system. Crimp fittings are used to connect convectors.
3. Connection of the heating system to the heating main - electric or water. In order to connect the baseboard to the system, a distribution comb is required.
4. Upon completion of installation work, check the operability of the device. Install the exterior decorative panel of the previously selected color.
DIY ceiling installation
Installing the ceiling skirting is a bit more difficult than installing the floor. First of all, due to the fact that the work is carried out on top. The most popular material for the manufacture of ceiling skirting boards is plastic. Such products are characterized by attractive appearance, moisture resistance and mechanical strength.
In the process of work, the presence of:
- hacksaw with a miter box,
- clerical knife with a rubber spatula,
- putties with masking tape.
Additional materials and tools are selected in accordance with the individual characteristics of the room. The skirting board is installed on the wall before it is finished or after. It is preferable to do the work after wallpapering or painting the walls.
The most difficult moment is to trim the skirting boards in compliance with certain angles for their joining. To facilitate this process, you can purchase special elements for joining corners, but their cost is comparable to the cost of one plinth plank. Therefore, it is cheaper to perform the correct pruning of the skirting board, after which the angle will be perfect.
To trim the skirting board at an angle, use a miter box. Minimize joints on the plinth sections that are visible when entering the room. Place butt areas behind tall cabinets, curtains or in inconspicuous places. Skirting of the skirting board for the outer and inner corner is different. First carefully measure and mark the baseboard, only then proceed to trim it.
To fix the skirting boards, use special glue or putty. After installing the baseboard on the wall, press it firmly against it and hold for a few seconds. After gluing the baseboard on the ceiling, seal the joints with putty, and paint the baseboard with a water-based paint.

Features of installing a wooden skirting board with your own hands
Wooden skirting boards are the most difficult to install. First of all, they need perfectly even walls; the smallest irregularities become visible after installation.
There are several options for wooden skirting boards - material made directly from wood or from MDF. Do-it-yourself installation of MDF skirting boards is easier.
First of all, you should choose a quality skirting board with an optimal level of wood moisture. If you select too wet wood, then after drying, deformation of the coating is possible.
Comparing a wooden baseboard with a plastic one, the first one does not have special fittings that facilitate the installation process. Therefore, all joints are made with high quality, and all angles must be perfectly even.
To trim the skirting boards use a hacksaw with a miter box. At the same time, two skirting boards are installed at right angles and marking is performed to form an external or internal angle between them.
The interval between the installation of the baseboard fasteners is about 65 cm. The baseboard is fixed with self-tapping screws. In the future, to fix the caps from the screws, a special grout or putty on wood of the corresponding color is used.
The option of fixing the plinth using finish or liquid nails is possible. The second option is relevant if the walls in the house are absolutely flat.
Start installing the baseboard from the inside or outside corner or from the doors. To do this, install the two necessary elements of the accessories in the required places, insert the end of the plinth rail into one of them and make a mark on the plinth at the second element, taking into account the fact that the plinth rail should go inside the corner or plug by 5 mm.
First, it is advisable to install skirting boards, which will not need to be cut. In this case, it is desirable to provide that the docking elements are in places that will be further covered by furniture.
If the plinth rail cannot be applied at the installation site due to its longer length, then the distance between the fittings is measured with a ruler and 10 mm is added to the result. Then, already on the plinth rail, a mark is applied for sawing. When marking with a ruler, it is better to add a couple of millimeters of length than to make the baseboard shorter. Excess can always be sawed off.
Sawing a plastic baseboard is much simpler than fillets, since there is no need to withstand sharp corners. All ends have a right angle. But nevertheless, if the end face of the rail is crooked, then the internal angles, since they are not fixed, can be biased. Therefore, it is still necessary when cutting, to ensure a right angle of the end of the baseboard.
More precisely, it is more convenient and faster to cut the baseboard with a hacksaw for metal, in a device called a miter box. If the miter box is not available, then I advise you to definitely purchase it. You can make a miter box in a couple of hours yourself from improvised material, it will be even better than a cheap one made from plastic.
Sawing in the miter box not only guarantees the right angles of the plinth rails, but also makes it possible to saw off lengths of only one millimeter.
After trying the rails in place, you need to use a knife to remove the burrs formed during sawing from the ends.
Drilling fixing holes in the walls for installing the skirting board
Perhaps the most critical operation when installing the floor skirting is drilling holes for mounting it on the wall. The result of work ultimately depends on the accuracy in height of the drilled holes.
The simplest conductor fixture, made in five minutes from improvised material, and a drill with the function of a perforator, will allow even inexperienced craftsmen to drill even without difficulty with high accuracy of the holes obtained. You can find out how to make a conductor for precise drilling yourself, choosing a drill and drill from the site page "Drilling holes in the walls."
With even walls, holes are drilled at a distance of 50 cm from each other. From the floor level at a height equal to the distance from the floor level to the middle of the cable channel of the installed baseboard. Since greater strength is not required to hold the skirting board reliably, it is enough to use a dowel with an outer diameter of 6 mm, a length of 30 mm and a 3.5 × 25 self-tapping screw.
After drilling holes, it is imperative to remove all dirt that has appeared. A vacuum cleaner is convenient for this. But you can simply sweep away the dirt with a brush on the mites.
Plinth installation on a drywall wall
If the walls in the room are made of drywall, mounted on a metal frame made of profiles, the base line of the baseboard may fall on the profile, which usually has a width of 30 to 50 mm.
You can do without drilling, if you use special screws with a drill at the end. To check the possibility of fastening behind the profile, it is enough to pierce the drywall with an awl at the level of the baseboard. If the awl rested on metal, then the dowels will not be needed.
One of the walls in my hallway was plasterboard on a frame. But I was not lucky, since for the flooring of linoleum the floor was leveled with plywood and its level did not rise a few centimeters. Therefore, the skirting line was higher than the frame profile. I had to use dowels specifically designed for mounting on plasterboard walls, called the “Butterfly”.
For information, one dowel “Butterfly” installed in a wall made of drywall can withstand a load of up to 10 kilograms. Therefore, it can be used to securely fasten not only skirting boards to the wall, but also TVs, shelves, paintings, mirrors and other household items.
To install the Butterfly dowel into a wall made of drywall, you must first drill a hole in it to ensure a tight fit of the dowel in the wall. You can drill with any drill using a jig. Next, it is necessary to press the protruding parts of the dowel rod to each other, so it is easily inserted into the hole in the wall. It remains to apply a few light blows to the dowel head with a hammer and you can proceed to fastening the baseboard.
It should be noted that the diameter of the self-tapping screw should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the hole in the dowel head, the length of the self-tapping screw should be no less than the length of the compressed dowel, since the self-tapping screw is screwed not into the dowel head, but into its movable end.
Fixing the baseboard to the wall
Some masters suggest first drilling holes in the plinth rails and drilling a wall through them, using dowels with caps. But this method cannot guarantee the accuracy of the installation of the plinth and in any case, even with diligence, gaps will be obtained in some places.
If necessary, for example, when laying a cable behind the baseboard or replacing linoleum, dismantling the baseboard fixed in this way will be very difficult. In addition, behind the baseboard there will be dust and crumbs from drilling, which I consider unacceptable. Therefore, I use, as you already understood, another method of fastening, which guarantees high quality work.
It is best not to drill holes for self-tapping screws in the baseboard, but to pierce it with an awl. As an awl, I use an old screwdriver whose blade is sharpened on a trihedral point. When the edges of the awl are rotated, the material is pushed apart, which makes the edges of the hole more dense. In Soviet times, the tool was made of tool steel, which had high hardness and at the same time was not brittle. Therefore, the awl of a screwdriver serves me for many years, it does not blunt and does not break. And thanks to the presence of faces, a hole with such an awl can be made without a drill, even in plywood.
To get a hole in the right place of the baseboard, you need to attach it to the wall at the installation site. Put a mark in the center of the cable channel, move the baseboard slightly away from the wall so that the dowel is visible, and pierce the hole in the mark strictly along the dowel location line. Now it remains only to wrap a self-tapping screw, threaded through the hole made into the dowel, and the plinth will be firmly and accurately fixed to the wall.
Installation of the outer corners of the baseboard
The outer corners of the skirting board are often located in the zone of intense movement of people and the likelihood of catching them is high. Therefore, the fastening of the outer corners must be approached with full responsibility. Since the corners are mounted on the wall just two centimeters from the corner, drilling a hole for a dowel can chop a corner. Therefore, it is necessary even at the repair stage when aligning the external corners of the walls to provide the possibility of reliable fixing of the external corners of the plinth. If the profile is not used when aligning the corners of the walls, then only a length of at least 20 cm can be laid from the floor in the area of the future fixing of the baseboard corner.
If the perforated corner profile is laid in advance, then it remains only to pierce the baseboard and sheet metal with an awl and screw in a short self-tapping screw with a thread reaching the hat itself. To reliably hold the corner, it is advisable to put a washer under the screw. It is easier to twist the screw, if you hold it with tweezers with bent ends.
The external corners of the skirting board are mounted on gypsum plasterboard walls using the same technology, since gypsum plasterboard sheets are usually attached to a metal profile, and screws can usually be screwed into it.
It remains only to install decorative plugs cable channel. For this, the plug bends, its ends are wound behind the fittings, after which it is straightened and tucked into the cable channel.
What are skirting boards?
A skirting board is a plank that is mounted at the junction of a floor and a wall. It performs several functions:
- Decorative. Makes the floor surface complete. Allows you to set color accents.
- Leveling. It allows you to hide minor flaws at the junction of the floor and wall plane, to close possible gaps or uneven edge of the floor covering.
- Protective. Protects walls from damage and moisture during cleaning.
Plinths are made of wood, plastic or MDF. On sale you can also find aluminum models.
According to their structure and purpose, skirting boards are divided into:
- Ordinary. They are made of wood or MDF. These are classic models that are installed in most houses of the old construction.
- With cable channels. I rarely make such models from wood; more often they are plastic. Allows you to hide all the wires and cables that pass through the floor. Thus, they play not only a decorative and protective role, but also improve the design of the room. They are mounted on self-tapping screws, on glue or using connecting profiles and self-tapping screws.

What is good about plastic skirting
Today, plastic skirting is surely replacing wood. What is the reason for this popularity? The reason lies primarily in the versatility of application and modern design. Plastic floor skirting is not afraid of moisture and aggressive environment, does not rot. This allows you to use it in almost any room. In the building materials market, models are presented in a wide range of colors, made with imitation of different types of wood and other materials. This allows you to find the best option for a specific design.
Compared to wood, plastic is more durable and its service life is almost unlimited. It is flexible, which allows you to hide small flaws in the curvature of the walls and arrange the floors are not rectangular in shape. Plastic does not require painting and additional processing with varnish or other compounds. It is easy enough to cut to the desired size.
During operation, such a skirting board is easy to clean and can be washed with almost any detergent. It is resistant to high and low temperatures, does not fade with time in the sun, and also does not support combustion. It is also important that it is much cheaper compared to the wooden counterpart.
We buy a plinth and accessories
So, having appreciated all the advantages of plastic models, we go to the store. When buying, you need to choose products of the same color, with the same pattern and texture.
Important! Pay attention to the batch number. In different production batches of the same model, the color or texture of the surface may vary slightly.
If you intend to conduct covert wiring, it is better to choose a model with a cable channel. It has a special niche for laying a wire or cable, flexible enough to hide small bumps in the wall and is easy to install. Special accessories are sold for plastic skirting boards:
- outer and inner corner,
When buying a skirting board, do not forget the hardware. Accessories are selected by color and texture of the baseboard
Before buying, you need to calculate how many internal and external corners will be covered during installation. Plugs complete the profile near the doors. Right and left plugs are available. Couplings do not have a specific mounting side; they connect parts of the baseboard.
Plinth installation without cable channel
Installation of a plinth of this type can be performed using special aluminum planks-fasteners or using self-tapping screws.
In the first installation method, first of all, on the bottom of the wall at a distance of 40-50 cm from one another, the places of fasteners are marked. The distance from the corner should be no more than 10 cm. In the designated places to a depth of 3-4 cm, drill holes into which a plastic dowel is inserted. After that, fixing plates are fixed with screws around the entire perimeter.
An inner corner is put on the edge of the profile. For better fixation, it can be glued with special glue. Installation starts from the inside corner of the room. Fittings must be latched. To continue the strip, put on the coupler. Then, the next inner or outer corner is put on the cut profile piece. First you need to measure and cut the desired length to the connection, connect the two strips, and then snap the corner. Thus, using accessories, they continue to trim and install the baseboard around the perimeter of the entire room. Near the door, the strip ends with a plug.
The procedure for installing a plastic baseboard using special aluminum mounts
If you still plan to lay a cable or wire under such a skirting board, then it is simply shifted, installing it at an angle to the wall.
Installation of such a profile will not be difficult even for a novice master. There are no traces of fasteners on the finished surface, which is naturally a big plus. If necessary, such a baseboard can be removed and moved to another location.
With the second method of fastening, the results of the work do not look so aesthetically pleasing, since the screws are located on the surface of the baseboard, but this fastening is the most durable. The procedure will be similar to that described above:
- On the baseboard profile, holes of 2-3 mm in diameter are drilled every 50 cm. A conical recess is made into the hole.
- Installation starts from the corner. The bar is pressed against the wall and made marks on it through the prepared holes with a pencil.
- According to the marks in the wall, holes of 6-8 mm are drilled and dowels are inserted into them.
- Place the baseboard against the wall and screw the screws into all the holes.
Such a skirting board will look more aesthetically pleasing if the self-tapping screw caps are closed with plastic round caps, which need to be matched to the color of the main profile.
Installation of floor skirting boards with cable channel
The fastening of this type of model is carried out using special dowel nails or self-tapping screws.
Installation procedure for floor skirting with cable channel
Important! For reliability of fastening, it is better to coat all accessories with plastic glue.
- First of all, carefully remove the cable channel strip. In the profile, every 50 cm with a 6 mm drill, holes are drilled.
- After that, put on the inner corner, apply the profile to the wall and outline the holes for the dowels through the holes.
- Holes are drilled in the wall.
- Insert the dowels.
- They apply a profile and screw it with screws or hammer a dowel-nails. Gradually installing couplings and corner profiles, continue installation around the entire perimeter of the room.
- Lay the cable in the baseboard channel.
- Replace the cover.
Installing plastic skirting boards using liquid nails
Unlike the methods described above, this is the least dirty and faster. Thoroughly measure, trim, install and glue the accessories on the baseboard. The strip of the wall under the baseboard is pre-primed. Apply a thin strip or drops of glue and press the profile against the wall.
