How to carry out the descent and ascent?

Danger. Obviously, it is much more difficult to climb a car than to drive on a flat road: the engine requires increased power, higher crankshaft speeds. To overcome the force of gravity and not having a clear opinion about how and what gear to go uphill on the mechanics, drivers twist the engine by pressing the gas pedal too hard. As a result, this often leads to a breakdown of the wheels in a slip. This effect is mainly affected by front-wheel drive vehicles, which is associated with unloading the front axle and reducing the adhesion of the wheels to the coating, especially slippery (clay, rolled snow, ice, etc.).

Hills and small hills are fraught with another danger. The driver sometimes does not see what is hidden by the next climb, and after all there may be a sharp turn, difficult obstacles (fallen trees, stones rolling down the slope, pedestrians, animals and much more) or a hole.

Common mistakes. Often, drivers incorrectly assess the steepness of the rise and choose the wrong gear (in the case of a mechanical gearbox), engine speed. For example, it’s almost impossible to climb a more or less serious slope, for example, only in 4th gear, so you need to change it to a lower one during the ascent. therefore uphill movement on mechanics is inevitably associated with a certain difficulty, since the clutch disengages during a gear shift. As a result, there is a break in the power flow from the engine to the wheels, due to which the car’s speed drops sharply, and the inertia of the uphill movement is too small to help the car actively go up.

Sometimes on narrow country paths, besides with a dangerous roadside, you have to climb uphill close to the center line of the roadway. This is fraught with a head-on collision at the top, especially if the oncoming car also did not move in its lane.

How to go uphill on mechanics

Safely. To confidently complete the climb, it is necessary, approaching it, to decide in which gear you will perform the maneuver. If the slope is not steep or short, then the one on which you rode on a flat road is enough. Most often it happens that the transmission needs to be changed to a lower one. You can, of course, lower the speed in advance, switch to II or even to I gear and climb crawl. But such a method will take a lot of time, consume a lot of fuel and wear out engine parts. Therefore, usually gears are switched on the rise. This should be done with the help of the so-called rebasing, which is performed at the moment when the engine speed began to fall, but the car is still actively moving up without a noticeable decrease in speed. No matter what happens, in any situation, our experts on roadside assistance on the roads of Moscow will come and provide the necessary assistance.

The relocation algorithm is as follows:

  1. depress the clutch pedal
  2. shift the gearshift lever to the neutral position,
  3. release the clutch pedal, the shaft will synchronize in the gearbox (in case of an acute shortage of time this can be omitted),
  4. quickly depress the gas pedal for approximately 1 / 3-1 / 2 of its stroke (professionals recommend raising the speed to values corresponding to the maximum engine torque, plus a margin of 500-1000 rpm),
  5. release the gas pedal
  6. squeeze the clutch
  7. turn on the gear one or even two steps lower than the one that was included before (it is most effective to switch from IV to II immediately, although the final choice depends on the car and gear ratios in the gearbox),
  8. smoothly (but quickly) release the clutch pedal to the starting point, simultaneously add traction by depressing the accelerator pedal.
From the next chapter it will be possible to learn how to move properly on the slopes: why the steeper the descent the lower the gear - explanation and pictures.

The safe way how to go uphill on mechanics depends on the location of the vehicle on the road. Approaching the top of the hill, try to move as far as possible to the right, without going into the curb, especially dangerous and loose. Having reached the top, carefully evaluate the situation and the obstacles in front of you. And in one of the following chapters it will be possible to learn how to rebuild in a dense stream if rebuilding in a dense stream of cars makes you afraid.

And further. A few words about the stop. Stopping and parking on the rise (if for some reason you had to do this) should be carried out only in a well-visible area where there are no sharp turns and other obstacles that block the view of the driver.

Never leave the car locked only with the parking brake, be sure to engage I gear. If there is a curb on the rise, try to turn the front wheels in its direction: this will prevent the car from rolling straight back, it will simply rest against the curb with the rear wheel. During long-term parking, it is advisable to put stops under the wheels - large stones or non-circular logs.

SDA. In that part of the SDA, which concerns traffic on the rise, overtaking is prohibited. " at the end of the climb, on dangerous bends and in other areas with limited visibility ”(p. 114).

By the way, contrary to popular belief, going down is much more difficult. It is on the descent that accidents most often occur. It is not recommended to work with brakes alone, you need to brake the engine. To do this, switch to low gear and release the clutch. Many drivers put the box in neutral in order to save fuel, although this is a bad idea.

If you need to first go up and then go down, it’s best to do it in the same gear.

It’s definitely impossible to go down to a higher one. With brakes, just control the acceleration of the car and do not allow acceleration.

Ascent and descent on the "machine"

Automatic transmission has been very popular lately. Indeed, the “automatic” is very convenient, because you do not need to constantly change gears. On an old car with automatic transmission, it is quite difficult to enter the hill. In order for the car to “pull” on a sharp rise, it was necessary to choose gear D or L. But after 20 minutes the overheat indicator began to flash.

If you are the owner of a brand new SUV with automatic transmission, then you can forget about such problems. There are no transmission restrictions.

The same goes for the descent. The gears are switched automatically due to engine braking, so it’s a pleasure to go downhill.

As for towing on the "machine", this is more difficult, as for automatic transmission there are limitations. First, the car you are going to tow should not be heavier than yours. Secondly, the motor must not be allowed to overheat. If you observe these two conditions, a car with automatic transmission will quite cope with a car of small mass, but get ready for the fact that the towing process will be quite slow.

Winding mountain road

In this case, brakes and low gears are extremely important.

Try to drive slowly, but if possible switch to third gear, shift so as not to overload the engine.

With constant ascents, the engine carries serious loads, often heats up, so a quick ride along the serpentine will not lead to anything good.

Manual transmission cars

Let's start with cars that have a manual gearbox. We rise first. And so that we don’t again pull back from the ascent, we need to squeeze the clutch to the stop before lifting, at the same time engaging the gear, and then press the gas pedal. At the same time we lower the clutch pedal, but not sharply. If the rise of the road is long, you should evaluate its approximate length and choose a low gear, in which it will be possible to go through it to the end. Usually choose a second or third gear. As for the first transmission, it is chosen by new drivers or when it is necessary to make turns when lifting as well. In other words, the first gear will be relevant if you need to slow down on the rise.

Experienced drivers, having reached the hill, immediately switch to one low gear and continue to climb on acceleration. If you suddenly feel that the car is not pulling and you have chosen the wrong gear, don’t step on it, as this will not lead to anything good. Better shift to a lower gear and try like this.

As for the tug, it should always be carried out in first gear, since the speed in this case is minimal, and the engine should work at high powers.

Now for the descent. Do not be surprised. Going down is much more difficult than going up, as accidents occur more frequently. It is not recommended to act during the descent with brakes alone. An experienced driver knows that with a steep descent, it is necessary to slow down the engine. To do this, again, switch to low gear by releasing the clutch pedal. It is impossible to bet on neutral during descent, although some drivers thus save on fuel. Is it dangerous!

If you need to get up first and then go down, do it in the same gear. At least, you should not go down in a higher gear than it was when climbing. The brakes during the descent must control the acceleration of the car and prevent acceleration.

In general, recently, many drivers have forgotten how to drive a car with manual transmission.

On the video - starting uphill on a car:

More and more began to produce machines with automatic transmission, which prefer mechanics. Indeed, driving a machine is much easier and you do not need to press the accelerator pedal every time and smoothly release it.

Yes it is. But it’s not so easy to climb a mountain with a car with automatic transmission, which is not new, but has sufficiently served its operational life. With a rather steep climb, any driver knows what to put on L or D, otherwise it does not pull. But after 15 minutes of driving at a speed of 20 km / h, the overheating lamp starts to light up. If you stop on the rise, you won’t be able to go further. In this case, it is advisable to change the fluid more often and monitor the radiator.

As for new cars with a gun, then when climbing a mountain they have practically no problems. Even with the forced restriction of gear shifting not higher than the third and with a full load, a car with automatic transmission rises well uphill. The same can be said about the descent. The car effectively brakes the engine, automatically shifting gears to lower ones.

Descent from the rise by car

If the descent is too steep, then we can advise you to include a limit before the second gear. And at the same time, the car will also save on fuel, rotating the engine only due to the reserve kinetic energy.

Now about the tug on automatic transmission. This is not a manual transmission, and a car with a gun has certain limitations that you need to know about. It is not only a matter of towing other vehicles that are subject to a restriction - to tow cars whose weight is not more than the mass of the car itself. For example, it may even be a small trailer. Although a car with automatic transmission pulls other cars in tow slowly, but it successfully copes with this. And here it is only necessary, as mentioned above, to ensure that there is no overheating of the engine.

It is rather a question of whether it is possible to take the car with automatic transmission in tow and lift it uphill. Here are the restrictions that must be observed.

Riding in the mountains on a serpentine

Above, riding options were considered on a regular road or track with ups and downs. Now imagine that you went to the mountains with your car and you have to drive serpentine, where the ascents and descents alternate with every minute frequency. Here, the desire to drive without endangering either yourself or your passengers should be inherent in absolutely all drivers. And to learn how to act in this situation will be very useful.

So. The difficult and difficult terrain is already playing against you in the mountains. Riding in such conditions will require maximum voltage not only from the driver, this is understandable. The car itself will be subject to this test. Of course, if you do not know how to properly descend from the mountain or climb it, the car will be doubly difficult and it may even fail on such a road.

Especially you need to pay attention to the brakes. They must be carefully examined and diagnosed. If the braking system reliably shows itself on ordinary roads, then on a serpentine it can fail, remember this!

It is impossible to overestimate the actions of the brake system, especially in the mountains. And a fast ride in serpentine conditions does not always help to climb a mountain efficiently and in a short time. Often in such conditions you have to go in low gear, the same second or first. If you notice a free gap ahead, switch to third gear, thereby giving the engine the opportunity to relax and take off the load.

Road in a mountain serpentine in Romania

In general, you can ride correctly in the mountains in two ways: after each serpentine, enter a lower gear and combine it on a flat road with a third one or overcome turns and ascents in second gear, bearing in mind the calculation of engine power.

The second method involves driving slowly but surely, especially on long mountain climbs, where the first method will lead to rapid heating of the engine. This is especially true for the machine. More about this was written above.

In addition, engine heating will occur frequently if the motor is cooled by water. With such loads as passing frequent and long rises, water will reach the boiling point very quickly. The time that the driver spends on cooling the motor completely nullifies that stretch of the path that the car travels at high speed.

Whether automatic or manual transmission, if the water begins to boil, you must definitely stop, otherwise serious engine damage may occur. For an overheated motor, gaskets, bearings and other elements quickly fail. If there is no way to stop, then you need to switch to lower gear and continue driving at the lowest possible speed. After all, we must not forget that the engine cools longer when it is stopped than when, under partial load, it continues to move.

When the car is standing, the water in the radiator boils for a long time. The inside of the motor is full of heat, but the water that has received the heat does not have time to give air when stopped, since it (air) passes through the radiator in a limited amount. On the contrary, when the car goes, but does not gain high speeds, the radiator passes more air.

Imagine a situation: you are on an ascent that will end soon and the descent will begin, and the water is boiling. In this case, you do not need to panic, but try to get to the end of the ascent and cool the motor during the descent. Many experienced drivers do just that, without lowering, naturally, the engine speed of the car.

Now about the descent. As mentioned above, it represents a greater danger than the rise. In this case, much depends on the driver, and not on the car. So, if the driver fails to timely diagnose the brake system or relies on it too much, problems may arise. On the descent, especially in the mountains, such things are not joked. As stated repeatedly, the driver must be able to brake the engine. This is the only way to avoid an accident, even if the brakes fail.

Watch this video:

Did you see the truck driver slow down the engine during the descent? It must be so.

Knowing how to go down the mountain is very important. And just at that moment you start to feel the car, its strengths and weaknesses, you see it from the inside.

Both the ascent and the descent, if you read this article and made useful conclusions for yourself, will be passed without problems. Let the brakes never fail on the descent, but if this happens, you already know what to do.
